Responsibilities & Requirements
The Patient Transport III supports patient care by safely transporting patients, specimens, and equipment throughout the healthcare facility, ensuring timely and secure movement in accordance with clinical and safety protocols. This role contributes to patient safety, comfort, and access to care while maintaining compliance with regulatory and infection control standards. Performs other duties as assigned. All job responsibilities are to be carried out in alignment with Kettering Health's mission, vision, values, and B Safe program.
Required Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
Skills
- Ability to safely lift, move, and transfer patients and equipment
- Effective verbal communication
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Basic computer or electronic record navigation
- Attention to detail
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Knowledge of infection control and safety procedures
Essential Functions
- Safely transports patients to and from clinical areas, diagnostic departments, and discharge points using appropriate equipment and transfer techniques.
- Assists patients with transfers between beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs, utilizing proper body mechanics and safety protocols.
- Transports laboratory specimens, medical equipment, and supplies as directed, ensuring timely and secure delivery.
- Maintains and sanitizes transport equipment (wheelchairs, stretchers, beds) according to infection control standards.
- Communicates effectively with nursing staff and other healthcare team members regarding patient status, special needs, or observed changes during transport.
- Verifies patient identification and follows all patient safety and privacy procedures during transport.
- Monitors and assists with patient comfort and safety, including the use of oxygen, IVs, or other medical devices during movement.
- Documents transport activities accurately in the electronic health record or designated system.
- Responds promptly to transport requests and prioritizes tasks based on patient acuity and operational needs.
- Adheres to all hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and safety standards, including HIPAA and OSHA guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a healthcare or patient care setting is preferred but not required.
- Previous experience in patient transport, phlebotomy, or EKG is preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
